Louis XIV

1638 - 1715

The visual arts of the Louis XIV style were produced in France during his reign. The king had luxury furniture made for his royal palaces and public buildings and the taste spread to become a national decorative arts style. Furniture was veneered with exotic and rare materials like tortoise shell and was heavily gilded. Common motifs included shells, satyrs, cherubs and mythological themes.
